Informally also called a tune, the melody is often the most identifiable component of a musical piece, acting as a powerful mode of communication, not only serving as the protagonist in its own drama but as a messenger from the artist to the audience. It is essentially the melody that speaks the emotional language of a music composition, the part of the song that makes a listener connect with the song. Melodies are produced by humans and through instruments that have pitch- guitar, flutes, saxophone, etc. 

Elements of a Melody

Now the question arises- what makes up such an important element of music? At its core, pitch and rhythm are two fundamental elements that make up the melody of a song. The pitch determines how low or high the sound is. It also refers to the audio vibration produced by an instrument. 

It’s the arrangement of pitches in a melody which creates a recognisable sound.

However, some other additional elements add to the richness of melody in music.  A renowned music composer from the past stated that the essential elements of any melody are duration, pitch, quality (timbre), texture, and loudness. Note that scales and keys also play a crucial role in shaping the melody of a song. 

Scales is another word for an organised sequence of notes and lays the foundation for melody. The kind of scale you use dictates the overall feel of your song. Songs in the major scale evoke the feeling of happiness and sound bright and vibrant. On the other hand, songs in the minor scale leave the listener introspective and add depth to the sad and meaningful lyrics of the music. 

The key of your song is crucial since it determines the overall tonal center of your composition, defined by its central note. For example, if you use a key of C major, your composition will sound bright and cheerful, as opposed to using minor keys like F minor.

Melodies are important because they attract and hold a listener’s attention to your composition. As mentioned, melodies evoke a wide range of emotions, be it the utmost happiness or bringing tears to the eyes. A powerful melody of a song makes audiences connect with the message of your song, regardless of the cultural background.

1. Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen: The melody of this song is one of my favourites of all time. The soaring vocal melody along the classic chord progression does a great job of tugging the emotions. The melody builds tension and then releases it, creating a profound emotional impact. 

2. Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen: This masterpiece features a range of beautiful melodies throughout its six sections. The soulful melodies of this song have an important role in making it so memorable. 

3. Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham Title Track: This classic song is a perfect example of beautiful and uplifting melodies in Bollywood songs. The melody in this song has Indian and Western influences, resulting in a very memorable sound which you can recognise in just a few seconds. 

4. Lag Jaa Gale by Lata Mangeshkar: This iconic Golden Era Song features a soul-stirring melody using a minor key, creating a sense of longing and yearning in the listeners. Because of such a beautiful melody, even today, the song is heard by people of different generations, and it never fails to make listeners feel a range of emotions.

Melody in Different Genres

After looking at the examples given above, you may have observed that the style of melody isn’t the same across genres. Let’s look at how the melody differs among different music genres. 

• Rock: Rock music is famous for its upbeat energy and sing-along lyrics. Thus, the melodies for rock songs are catchy and riff-based. The energetic feel of the rock songs is the courtesy of power chords and bluesy scales. 
• Classical: Melodies for classical music are incredibly intricate, evocative, and expressive. Melodies for this genre usually follow well-known structures and forms and use a variety of scales and harmonies. 
• Pop: The melodies for pop songs are created to be catchy and memorable. These melodies use simple chord progressions and repetitive hooks to make these songs latch onto the listener’s mind. 
• EDM: Melody music for EDM is usually short, repetitive, and designed around synthesizers. The repetitive nature and short duration of notes make the song groove-worthy, making listeners dance and shout for hours. 

Similarly, the melodies for other genres, like hip-hop, jazz, country, etc, also differ, showcasing that the world of melodic expression is diverse! 

Tips for Creating Melodies

1. Improvise upon a basic chord progression: Play chords of your choice on your guitar or piano, and start singing or playing the instrument with the aim of writing a melody. Start creating a melody with no preconceived ideas, try out different ideas and think out loud. You can even start by saying random phrases; you never know, you might end up with a thought-provoking and meaningful sentence. Creating melodies from scratch requires you to jam with yourself for extended durations and try out different styles.

2. Try out a framework: If freeform writing makes you clueless about what steps to take, having a framework or a plan can help you write better melodies. You can try writing the melody of the chorus section first and then build up upon the verse and pre-chorus melody. This framework can help you write melodies in the verse and pre-chorus section that would do justice to the melody of the chorus section. 

3. Add unexpected rhythms to your melody: If you feel like the melody for your song sounds too basic, try incorporating some unexpected or off-beat rhythms to make your melody exciting. Add minor and subtle changes to your rhythm and see how it transforms your melody. 

4. Add leaps: The melodies often follow a stepwise motion, meaning a note is followed by a note that is either a half-step or a whole step away. You can add a few leaps (add notes two or more whole steps away) to your melody to make it unique and refreshing. 

5. Take inspiration from your favourite songs: Carefully listen to your favourite songs and try to identify what is about the melody that interests you. Once identified, incorporate these elements, whether scales, leaps, keys, or rhythmic shifts, into your melody.
