About the Song

Luka Chuppi is one of the rare songs in Indian cinema that speaks about the love and affection between a son and a mother. A.R. Rahman brought the best of his compositions to this song, and the result is truly magical. The term Luka Chuppi, translated to "Hide and Seek," is from the film Rang De Basanti, which was released in 2006; the soundtrack album of the movie was released on 8 December 2005. The lyrics of the song were written by Prasoon Joshi and rapper Blaaze.

Aamir Khan, who is the lead actor in the movie, worked with A.R. Rahman and Joshi came up with different songs that are part of the movie. In addition to this, A.R Rahman chose Aamir Khan to sing one of the songs, but later, the recording, which he did, turned out to be more of a poetic recitation.

Joshi in one of his interviews said that the songs he wrote for the film were his best creations even after 15 years. Also, to hear legendary Lata Mangeshkar sing his lyrics is one of the highlights of his career, he said.

For this song, Joshi sat with Lata Mangeshkar and A.R. Rahman to discuss the circumstances behind the song. Joshi wrote the lyrics keeping in mind that a mother has lost her son. The game of Hide and Seek, which is the main theme of the song, shows that the son won't be coming back and that he has hidden from his mother forever. During the initial recording of the song, Joshi said that he had teary eyes, and there were others present in the studio who were also seen crying as Lata Mangeshkar sang his heavy-hearted song.

Luke Chuppi won the Filmfare Best Music Director Award, and he was also considered for an Academy Award for Best Original Song nomination for India.
