Rock N Roll Soniye is a song from the Bollywood film Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, which was released in 2006. This particular song is a dance number in an otherwise slow romantic drama, which was directed by Karan Johar, who also co-written it with Shibani Bathija. The producer of the film was his mother, Hiroo Yash Johar, who at that time was the head of the Dharma Productions banner.
Both in the film and in this song, you can see A-list actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Rani Mukherji, Preity Zinta, and Kirron Kher. The main theme of the movie revolves around marital infidelity and dysfunctional relationships. Most of the movie was shot in New York; the story starts with Dev and Maya falling in love while both of them are married to other individuals. The movie took 90 days to shoot in the United States; the music composition was handled by Shankar-Eshaan-Loy and the lyrics of the songs were written by Javed Akhtar.
This is the second time that Javed Akhtar and Shankar-Eshaan-Loy collaborated to create magical music for Dharma Productions. In addition to this, this trio of composers replaced the usual collaborators of Karan Johar, who used to compose songs for his previous films. The audio rights of the film were acquired by Sony Music India. The song Rock N Roll Soniye picturised Amitabh, Abhishek, and Preity in the 60’s Rock N Roll track, and it was sung by Shankar Mahadevan, Shaan and Mahalakshmi Iyer.
Even though some music critics tried their best to make the music album go down as hard as possible, the composition prowess of Shankar-Eshaan-Loy had done enough to make the album float. Even after 15 years, songs from that movie are still remembered, and people love to listen and dance to those numbers, which shows the longevity of the composers.
When the music album was released, it stayed at the number spot in India for about ten weeks straight, despite having tough competition from other musical albums like Gangster: A Love Story, Fanaa and Krrish. According to the sales figures, the album sold more than 1,900,000 copies across India, making it the second-best-selling music album of that year.
