About the Song

Cocaine is a song written and recorded in the studio by J.J. Cale, but the cover performed by Eric Clapton in 1977 gained more popularity than the original version. Eric Clapton put this song on his album, Slowhand. J.J. Cale's version of Cocaine did get some recognition, climbing to the No.1 spot in New Zealand for one week. Then, the song was released by Eric Clapton, and it became the 7th most-sold single globally in 1977.

Glyn John made Eric Clapton record Cocaine, the live version of the song for the album Just One Night, which also made it into Billboard's Hot 100. Before and even after the success of Cocaine, Eric Clapton kept on recording songs written and recorded by J.J Cale. Some examples are After Midnight and Travelin Light. According to many artists and music producers, it was the song Cocaine that made Eric Clapton more popular even though he had his list of song chart hits.

Cocaine in Eric Clapton's voice became iconic, and even to this day, you can find the latest Hollywood flicks using his version of the song when introducing their main character. According to Clapton, Cocaine is not about consuming the drug; it is an anti-drug song that warns listeners about how they should stay away from it as it is pretty addictive and deadly.
