Saawariya is the title track of the movie of the same name; every song in the movie is directed and composed by Monty Sharma. In addition to this, the lyrics were written by Sameer. When the movie was released, it got mixed reviews; some critics gave the soundtrack 3 stars out of 5, while some commented that the soundtrack of the movie would only be remembered for months as the director did not try anything special to make it memorable. Still, the album sold more than 10,00,000 units all over India, making it the fourth highest-selling album of 2007.
Saawariya was pretty special because it was the first movie by Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor, produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The movie was based on the story of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s 1848 short story called The White Nights. It was also the last time we got to see the performance of Zohra Sehgal and Begum Para before their deaths. The movie was produced by Sony-Pictures Entertainment, and it was the first movie to get a North American release by a Hollywood studio. Furthermore, it was the first movie to get the Blu-ray disc conversion after the release.
The movie was considered to be a commercial disaster; from negative to mixed reviews, this movie took the bashing of both fans and critics. The only good thing about the movie was its soundtrack, production design, grand artistic approach, and mediocre performance of the leading actors. Still, Saawariya was able to grab 6 nominations in the 53rd Filmfare Awards in which Rani Mukerji was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, Monty Sharma was nominated for Best Music Director, Ranbir Kapoor won Best Male Debut, and Shaan won Best Playback Singer for his contribution in Jab Se Tere Naina.
