About the Song

‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil,’ a mega-hit, is the title track of the Bollywood movie of the same name and was released in August 2016. It was the first song to be released from the soundtrack. The film, ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ is based on the theme of unrequited love and the soundtrack does complete justice to the movie’s emotional depth. The famous soundtrack was composed by Pritam, while the lyrics were written by Amitabh Bhattacharya. Arijit Singh sang ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ and added glory to the genius work done by Pritam and Amitabh.

It’s time for some trivia now! Amitabh Bhattacharya shared on The Kapil Sharma Show that this iconic track was actually composed in the backseat of a car. He penned down the lyrics while he was going to meet the film’s director, Karan Johar. By the time they reached office, he had written down the lyrics of the entire song. Moreover, did you know that an optional track to the title track was recorded? Both Pritam and Amitabh were tensed and unsatisfied before the release of the song. This optional track was titled ‘Tu Jo Mila,’ but was later used for the movie Bajrangi Bhaijaan. The lyrics ‘Kyuki Tu Dhadkan, Main Dil’ were penned down as ‘Kyuki Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ by Pritam but were later tweaked for the film, Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

The song ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ was highly loved by the audiences and received critical acclaim. As per the trends by Google, this song was the topmost Hindi song in India during 2016–17. The title track gained over a million streams within 48 hours post-release on Saavn. The song secured the first position on the Radio Mirchi Top 20 Countdown Chart and remained on the chart for more than 4 months. At the year’s end, it held rank 5 on the Radio Mirchi Top 100 Countdown Chart. It also secured rank 17 on the Billboard Charts and stayed on the chart for six weeks. Arijit Singh took home the Filmfare award for Best Playback Singer- Male for this song and Amitabh Bhattacharya won a Screen Award for Best Lyricist.
