About the Song

‘Channa Mereya,’ the third single of the movie titled ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ was released in 2016 and became an instant hit upon its release. The song’s title translates to ‘The moon is mine’ and revolves around unrequited love, longing, and heartbreak. The lyrics of this emotional ballad are penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya, while the music is composed by Pritam, with Arijit Singh weaving magic with his voice. This song is a fusion-folk track strongly influenced by Sufi and Semi-classical music.

Amitabh Bhattacharya recounted in an interview with SpotboyE that Karan Johar, the director of the film, approved the song ‘Channa Mereya’ the moment he heard it. Also, Ranbir Kapoor, the character on whom the song is portrayed, has often admitted that ‘Channa Mereya’ is by far the best song in his entire career. Moreover, as per sources, it is claimed that Ranbir Kapoor was so moved by the emotional depth of the track that he requested to record particular scenes live, with the track playing in the background instead of lip-synching. It added a touch of realism to the scene.

This song is known and loved for its emotional resonance and bittersweet and melancholic feel. The lyrics are poetic and heartfelt, expressing the pain of an emotional farewell to a beloved, making it an ultimate heartbreak song.

‘Channa Mereya’ received a highly positive reception from critics and the masses. It won several awards, including Filmfare awards for Best Lyricist and Stardust awards for Best Playback Singer (Male). ‘Channa Mereya’ is also on the Jio-Saavan’s top-songs-of-all-times list.
