About the Song

Rishtey is a song from 2007 Bollywood flick Life in a…Metro, this song was released alongside other soundtracks which were part of the film on 17th March 2007. The entire album for the movie was composed by Pritam and the lyrics were written by Sayeed Quadri, Amitabh Verma, and Sandeep Shrivastava. Bob Dylan’s “I Want You” keeps on playing in the background when Shruti and Rishi are standing in front of the vending machine, and Shruti mistakes Rishi for gesturing and speaking to her. But that particular song was not part of the soundtrack.

According to the Indian trade website Box Office India, the soundtrack album sold more than 11,00,000 copies. In addition to this, the soundtrack became 2007’s twelfth highest-selling album. Alvida from Life in a…Metro became one of the most popular songs of 2007; Pritam composed that song back in the 90s, during the time when he was still struggling to find a job as a composer.

Furthermore, one crucial aspect of Pritam’s composition in this movie was the integration of his band Metro, which he formed with the help of Suhail Kaul, and Bangladeshi singer Farukh Mahfuz Anam, also known as James. These three can be found in a movie playing songs whenever the storyline is moving towards an important juncture; with their song, the director makes the story move forward. This is something that has never happened in any Indian film till that time and even to this day. Both the movie and the soundtrack of the film were a commercial success; with just a 17 million rupees budget, the film was able to achieve 250 million rupees box office collection along with widespread critical acclaim.
