About the Song

'Muskurane Ki Wajah,' officially titled 'Muskurane,' is a romantic single from the 2014 Bollywood film CityLights, a remake of the BAFTA-nominated British film Metro Manila (2013). CityLights features the real-life couple Rajkummar Rao and Patralekha Paul as a married couple trying to earn a livelihood in Mumbai. This movie was Patralekha's acting debut, for which she won the Screen Award for Most Promising Newcomer – Female.

The song ‘Muskurane’ is sung by the king of melody, Arijit Singh, composed by Jeet Gannguli, and written by Rashmi Singh. All three have done a terrific job creating a song that captures the depth of the characters’ relationship and their struggles in the new city. Rashmi was praised for her simple yet conversational lyrics in ‘Muskurane,’ for which she received the Best Lyricist award at the 60th Filmfare Awards.

In an interview, Jeet Ganguli shared the creative process behind making this masterpiece of a song. He shared that Mukesh Bhatt (the co-producer) had envisioned the album to have songs like the ones by SD Burman and RD Burman- songs that will stay on the shelves for a long time. While composing the song 'Muskurane,' Jeet's biggest challenge was to bring his producers' vision to reality- to create an eternal melody that is easy to hum but has depth.

He said it was close to midnight when he started strumming his guitar. It was half past 12 when he called Mukesh Bhatt to play the ‘Mukhhda’ for him. Bhatt's reply was ‘wow’- exactly what Jeet had hoped for. The next day, he composed the Antara, which was again highly loved by the team, and that is how this beautiful song was composed. Soon after, Arijit Singh recorded the song at 1:30 am at Jeet’s studio within two to three hours.
